THOUSANDS of race packs will start being sent out to Admiral Swansea Bay 10k runners from next week.

The race packs include a race day guide, personalised race number with electronic time-recording chip on the back and details on how to collect the 2018 tech t-shirt.

Entries for the annual race, which takes place on Sunday September 16, close on Friday August 31.

Swansea Council is behind the event, which is being sponsored by Admiral for the twelfth consecutive year. As well as the 10k, there are also 1k, 3k and 5k junior fun runs, along with a 10k wheelchair race.

About 5000 people are expected to take part again this year.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Innovation, Regeneration and Tourism, said: “With a backdrop of so much beautiful scenery, it’s no surprise running is part of the rich culture of our city.

“Earlier this year the Admiral Swansea Bay 10k was named the best 10k race in Wales in the 2018 Running Awards and it’s also been nominated in the 2019 Running Awards as well.”

Cllr Francis-Davies said: “An exceptionally popular feature of Swansea’s annual events calendar, the Admiral Swansea Bay 10k is a terrific race for elite athletes, charity fundraisers and people looking to tackle their personal bests or conquer personal fitness goals.

“Set against the iconic sweep of Swansea Bay on a flat course, this award-winning event also includes junior races for children, which give a great introduction to road-running.

“With entries closing at the end of August, I’d urge anyone interested to enter this year’s event as soon as possible to avoid disappointment because the race always reaches capacity, often before the closing date.

“People who take part are overwhelmingly positive about the experience because of the quality of the race’s organisation and management, and the support they receive from hundreds of people lining the route.”

A mascot race is also taking place on the day of this year’s 10k, so entries are invited from groups, organisations and companies looking to win the £100 on offer for the winning mascot.

Entry details:

  • 10k: £23 affiliated / £25 non-affiliated. All entrants will receive a tech t-shirt. All finishers will receive a medal and goody bag.

“Gyda golygfeydd prydferth Bae Abertawe yn gefndir i’r ras wastad, mae’r digwyddiad arobryn hwn hefyd yn cynnwys rasys i blant sy’n rhoi cyflwyniad perffaith i redeg ar y ffordd iddynt.

“Gyda’r dyddiad cau ar gyfer cofrestru ar ddiwedd mis Awst, byddwn yn annog unrhyw un sydd â diddordeb yn y digwyddiad eleni i gofrestru cyn gynted â phosib er mwyn osgoi cael ei siomi gan fod y ras bob amser yn llawn, yn aml cyn y dyddiad cau.

Junior Race entries now open!

HUNDREDS of junior runners are getting set for this year’s award-winning Admiral Swansea Bay 10k.

The starting gun has fired for entries for the hugely-popular junior races which feature different distances to the main adult’s event.

Youngsters putting their name forward by the end of August will receive a race t-shirt on top of the medal, certificate and goodie bag they get when they cross the finishing line.

Hundreds of people have already signed up for the main race and the junior event will challenge youngsters at the 1k, 3k or 5k distance depending on their age group.

Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Innovation, Regeneration and Tourism, said: “The Admiral Swansea Bay 10k is one of the jewels in the city’s annual events crown and the crowds of young people who participate or just pop down to watch increases year on year.

“The Admiral Swansea Bay 10k was voted the Best 10k in Wales in the 2018 Running Awards – we’re proud of the title because it’s a poll of runners themselves so it says something about just how good the event is.

“The award proves it’s a hugely-popular event and whether you’re a junior or an adult runner, there’s still plenty of time to get some practice in before the big day on September 16.”

More than 4,500 people took part in last year’s race. As well as the main 10k race, there were also 1k, 3k and 5k junior fun runs, along with a 10k wheelchair race and a 100-metre dash for mascots.

Electronic time recording means that competitors will find out quickly and easily whether their efforts were a personal best on a running-friendly course with some of the finest views anywhere in the country.

Junior race entries are now open with 1k races for those aged 11 years and under, 3k for ages 9-14 and 5k for ages15-21. Early bird entry is £6.50 but hurry to enter as the price will increase on 1 July.

Entries for the main race opened just after last year’s event finished and the early-bird entry fee is £22 for affiliated runners and £24 for the non-affiliated. The early-bird offer for the main race ends on June 11.

Whether it’s the  junior races or the main 10k you’re interested in, the deadline for entries is August 31, or when maximum capacity is reached if sooner – maximum capacity has been reached prior to the closing date in recent years so enter early to avoid disappointment.
